The microbrand movement has fundamentally transformed watch collecting. These brands are the true innovators of the industry, taking daring design risks that heritage giants often avoid. But for all their visionary work, a structural flaw in the distribution model remains – one that calls into question the long-term viability of the brands we’ve come to love.
Because most microbrands operate on a direct-to-consumer model, they exist almost entirely in the digital realm. There is no local boutique to visit. No display case to browse.
In this world, we are forced to buy based on a “render and a prayer.” We study the macro shots, watch the reviews, and wait weeks – sometimes months – to finally unbox them, only to realize the moment it touches our wrist that the feeling just isn’t there. Whether it’s the balance being off, the way the dimensions wear on the wrist, or the character of the watch just failing to hit the mark, the disappointment is real.
THE TACTILE DEFICIT: AN UNSUSTAINABLE MODEL
The “Tactile Gap” isn’t just a frustration for the collector; it is a quiet killer for the brands themselves. In a model where the first physical touchpoint happens after the transaction, the financial costs mount behind the scenes.
Common Wrist Club serves both the collector and the creator by restoring confidence in the purchasing process. We provide the physical certainty enthusiasts crave, and the financial viability creators need.
Common Wrist Club solves the “Tactile Gap” by providing a shared library of the most sought-after microbrands. We act as the operational backbone, acquiring the watches that enthusiasts are curious about and placing them in a continuous circuit of discovery.
This is a collaborative effort, driven and defined by our members. Our mission is to provide clarity of presence, ensuring that your journey from curiosity to acquisition is guided by experience rather than imagination. We provide the hands-on discovery that online storefronts cannot offer, giving you the certainty to find those special pieces that truly belong in your collection.
Limited Availability: We are strictly limiting our initial launch to The Founders 500. This ensures that the collective library launches perfectly balanced, allowing members to experience the particular pieces they are eager to see. As the library expands, so will the club – but it is The Founders 500 who will chart its path.
Q: In a nutshell what is Common Wrist Club?
A: Common Wrist Club solves a core constraint in the microbrand industry: the inability to try on a watch before you buy it. We are a collective ecosystem designed to strengthen and sustain this vital market segment. For enthusiasts, we offer a shared library allowing them to experience microbrand watches on their own wrist before committing to a purchase, while simultaneously protecting the long-term viability of innovative creators – ensuring we can continue enjoying the best that microbrands have to offer.
Q: Is this a watch rental or a mystery box service?
A: It is neither. The Common Wrist Club is a discovery platform designed to put microbrand watches in your hands so you can touch, feel, and experience these unique timepieces in person. The Club isn’t a final destination for collectors; it serves as a bridge. By experiencing a watch firsthand, you can make an informed decision to support independent makers by purchasing your favorites directly from the brands themselves.
Q: But every brand has a return policy. Why pay a membership fee just to see a watch when I can purchase it and return it at no cost if I don’t like it?
A: In practice, a “no cost” return is rarely cost-free. For international microbrands, especially, you often end up bearing the expense of return shipping and forfeiting nonrefundable customs duties and taxes. This creates a “trial tax” where you lose money simply to see a watch in person. This friction hurts the entire community. It costs the consumer money to simply “try” a piece, it costs the brands money in lost shipping and unrecoverable inventory, and most importantly, it causes collectors to pass on great watches to avoid the hassle. The Common Wrist Club eliminates this cycle, providing a risk-free bridge that protects your capital while supporting the growth of the brands we love.
Q: What price range of watches will I be able to experience through the Club?
A: The Club focuses on the heart of the microbrand space. The collection will primarily consist of timepieces ranging from entry-level models to premium releases valued at up to $2,500. This range ensures that members can experience a diverse rotation of styles, movements, and craftsmanship levels as they discover their next favorite brand.
Q: Which watches will The Club be adding to the pool?
A: The Club is entirely member-driven. Our community shapes the overall direction of the Club and selects the specific brands they most wish to see added to the pool. We actively acquire the timepieces you want to experience most, ensuring the library reflects the collective interests of our members.
Q: How will The Club be sourcing these watches?
A: The Club sources timepieces through several strategic channels, all centered on providing a genuine “on-wrist” experience. We partner directly with brands to acquire watches that may have slight visual imperfections making them unsellable as “pristine retail condition.” as well as “open box” returns that brands prefer not to return to retail inventory.
Additionally, we use membership funds to purchase new models directly from brands at a discounted rate. By sourcing watches intended for evaluation rather than pristine retail sale, The Club can offer a more diverse and rapidly evolving pool for our members to explore.
Q: What does the member journey look like from selection of the watch to delivery?
A: The Club maintains a curated pool of timepieces visible through our online portal. Members simply request the watches they want to experience, and a queue is formed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Once your viewing window is complete, you will ship the watch directly to the next member in the queue. Pre-paid shipping labels are generated automatically through the portal – you simply print, attach, and send. This peer-to-peer rotation serves two vital functions: it maximizes the speed of the rotation so more members in a given month get personal time with their selected watches, and it keeps membership costs lower by eliminating unnecessary transit back to a central hub.
Q: Isn’t it a privacy risk for other members to see my personal address right there on the shipping label?
A: That is a valid concern, and we have built-in safeguards to protect your privacy. First, your full name is never disclosed on the shipping label; only your membership number and your chosen public profile name are visible.
Secondly, you have the option to set a local UPS or FedEx Access Point as your primary shipping address. While this requires a trip to pick up your delivery, it effectively obscures your residential address, ensuring your home remains private while you enjoy the benefits of The Club.
Q: How many watches will I receive each month?
A: You will receive three watches per month. This rotation gives you the ability to experience the microbrand watches you desire most as they are released throughout the year.
Q: How long can I keep each watch?
A: You have a three-day window with each timepiece – a sufficient amount of time to experience its weight, wearability, and craftsmanship. This window provides the balance needed to keep the watches circulating, while providing the clarity needed to decide if the piece belongs in your collection before you commit to a direct purchase from the brand.
Q: What is the cost of membership?
A: The monthly membership fee is $135 (plus applicable taxes). This flat rate covers your monthly rotation and shipping of three timepieces.
Q: Is Common Wrist Club a non-profit? How are membership funds actually
allocated?
A: Common Wrist Club is a for-profit entity, but we operate with a radical 70/30 allocation model that ensures the Club’s growth is fueled by the community’s interests. This structure commits the majority of every dollar flowing through the Club to the engine that puts the actual watches on members’ wrists.
The 70/30 Rule:
70% of all Revenue is dedicated to Direct Circulation & Acquisition. These are the “hard costs” required to get watches into the hands of our members, including:
• Acquisition: Purchasing new models to expand and refresh the pool.
• Circulation: All shipping and delivery costs.
• Maintenance: Professional servicing, parts, and watch care.
30% of all Revenue covers “Soft Costs” and Operations. This includes:
• Infrastructure: Platform fees, credit card processing fees, custom software to reserve, track, and circulate the watches.
• Operations: Rent, labor, and company profit.
This 70/30 split is the heartbeat of our community – applying to everything from Membership Dues, Ad Revenue, Affiliate Links, Club Merch, and Watch accessories etc. By ensuring the vast majority of The Club’s revenue is reinvested into the pool, we guarantee that as the Club grows, the collection grows with it.
Q: Will there be any discounts available if I decide to purchase a watch from one of these brands?
A: We are currently developing a model with the brands that will provide exclusive, significant discounts for our members. For purchases with a brand’s standard return policy, discounts can be up to 5%, while watches sold as “Final Sale” would see discounts between 12% – 15%. Since you will be seeing and trying on these watches before committing to a purchase, you can capture those cost savings – while confidently knowing you intend to keep the watch.
So, depending on your annual purchases and the price points of your timepieces, the total discounts realized can significantly offset – or even exceed – the cost of your membership.
Our goal is to create a sustainable ecosystem that offers maximum value to the community while ensuring independent makers remain profitable. By aligning our community’s interests with the success of these creators, we ensure the continued vitality and evolution of the microbrand space.
